How can we explain that a system of forced labor such as the mita did not generate greater opposition and upheaval in the economic processes associated with the famous Cerro Rico de Potosí? Rossana Barragán R. analyzes the social history of “silver commodity” production in an industrial belt that relied on the complexity of the mining mita, highlighting the continuous and gradual agency of the mitaya population and the indigenous communities organized into ayllus.
